A medieval fortress perched high above the Rhône Valley

The Mornas Fortress overlooks the village and the Rhône Valley from a limestone outcrop more than 130 meters high.

The earliest written records of Mornas date back to the 9th century, under the name Rupea Morenata. The medieval castle, meanwhile, first appears in the archives in 1088. Contested during the Middle Ages between the Counts of Toulouse—including Raymond VI—and the Archbishops of Arles, the fortress subsequently came under papal authority as part of the Comtat Venaissin.

Its location controlled a strategic passage between Provence and the Kingdom of France. The Wars of Religion left a lasting mark on it: in 1562, the tragic episode known as the “Sauto Barri” saw the garrison thrown from the top of the ramparts.

Left in ruins for centuries, the site is being revitalized thanks to the Friends of Mornas association, which is working to restore it and bring it back to life in the spirit of the Middle Ages.
